I have officially retired from iconing and graphic making. I just want to thank everyone who followed this journal and my website all these years. Without you, I would have given up ages ago but your encouraging words always kept me going. I've had fun, but, as a good friend said to me, "when it's no longer fun, it's time to move on."

So, that's what I'm doing. This journal is not going anywhere and neither is the website - at least, not for a long, long time. This way, what I have made can still be downloaded.

Well, it's finally here. My husband who had left for Iraq on March 11th of this year is coming home. I can't even begin to describe how excited I am to see him. His plane will land on the base on Wednesday, approximately 4pm EST. So, after Wednesday, I will be mostly unavailable for a while. ♥

Until I return, I just want everyone to know that ILU for expressing your support on my previous posts about him being gone and I will talk to you all soon.

Wow, I've been a busy bee lately. I finally (after 2 or more years) updated AnimeChild.com! I'm happy with how it came out and it's easy to edit so I can stop avoiding it now, haha.

Check out the new look.

My next project will be to work on my actual brushes page. That one is going to be a killer. x_x;

PS Tutorial (7.0) - Understanding Selective Coloring

This tutorial should be translatable for newer versions of Photoshop. This tutorial is not dial-up friendly, as it utilizes example images to assist in understanding.

Tutorial: Using the selective coloring tool without abusing it.
Purpose: To help people understand the selective coloring tool and how to use it to enhance colors in your images.
Level: Beginner - detailed. Advanced Photoshop users may find this tutorial tedious.
Disclaimer: I am not proclaiming myself a Photoshop expert or graphics making God. This is simply written to help people learn to use a tool that has become very abused. I myself have abused it in the past and I've learned from my mistakes. :)

The first thing we need to do is be able to identify the selective coloring tool so that we can use it. There are two ways to use it - directly on the image itself:

or by making it a separate layer on top of the image we're working with:

I highly recommend that you stick to making it a new layer, so you don't alter the actual image especially if you somehow manage to make a mistake that you can't go back and correct. For the purpose of this tutorial, I will always be making the selective coloring on a new layer. Layers are your friend.

I'll start off with some badly abused uses of the selective coloring that have somehow managed to make it into mainstream iconing. All examples are made by me and, because he's so easy to abuse (and frequently done so by iconers) I'm going to use Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) - poor guy!

Bad examples of selective coloring:

What's wrong with these icons? First, people don't have sunburned lips normally or orange toned skin. Seriously! While it's nice to enhance colors such as the red of Rupert's hair or the blue of the background, you have to remember to take the entire icon into consideration. Bad uses of selective coloring can also cause an image to appear washed out, over sharpened and on occasion pixely (or appearing as though it were saved as a .gif).

So let's start off with this image of Ron on the train to Hogwarts. Although there are several ways to brighten an image, for the purpose of this tutorial, I am going to simply duplicate the layer by right clicking on it and choosing duplicate layer then in the layers window I am going to set it to screen. Here are the screenshots so you can do this:

This will give you some basic brightening:

Please note that I'm not making an icon here, I'm simply showing the use of the selective coloring tool so we won't be going through the steps of cropping or sharpening. You can do that on your own if you choose - you'll still be able to follow the steps of the tutorial. In your layers window, please make sure that you have the top most layer selected (that would be the layer you set to screen then go to Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Selective Color. It will bring up a pop-up box like this:

You can change the name of it if you like just leave the other settings as they are. When you click on OK to continue, it will bring up the selective coloring window:

A good thing to know is that you can alter multiple colors in your image with this one layer, or you can simply use this for just the reds and create a new selective coloring layer to handle other colors. If you accidentally close your Selective Color layer at anytime by hitting OK, you can can bring the window back up by double clicking on the outlined area on the image below:

Here are a list of colors that can be manipulated:

I'll start with REDS so we can bring out the color of Ron's hair. I want to express the importance of playing with settings - these settings are good for this image and if you choose to try this tutorial out on your own image, it's likely will not produce the same results. Taking out the cyan and adding magenta and yellow, it brings out the orange/red in Ron's hair - but also brings it out in his face:

I want to make Ron's skin tone more natural so I go to the WHITES setting and lower the settings on yellow and magenta until his skin tone looks a little more normal. The change is not dramatic, and that's ok, we just want to even out his skin:

Now, as you can see, Ron still looks like he's wearing lipstick. That might be ok for some strange fanfiction (you know it's out there - you just haven't come across it yet) so we're going to actually erase part of the selective color layer so that his lips aren't as enhanced as his hair is. On our layers list, the white highlighted area in the example below is called a mask. A mask is very hand to have, it allows you to erase out some of the parts of the selective color area that we don't want affected by our changes.

Now take your eraser tool and make your settings. Just a suggestion, when working with an area that you are going to erase on, enlarge the image so you you are only erasing on the area that you want to. It's easier to be more exact when the image is enlarged. My brush settings are below - this window is underneath your menu at the top of the screen. If for some reason you don't see it, go to Windows -> Options and make sure this is checked.

After enlarging my image (you can use the magnify tool or using Ctrl-Shift-+ shortcut to enlarge) I erased out the area above Ron's lips to get rid of the too-red coloring. The area inside the marquee is where I erased so you could see the difference in the natural coloring of his lips and the obnoxious lip-stick red (the image appears pixely because it is magnified by 300%).

As a reminder, you are erasing on the white mask area. When you finish erasing, it will leave the area black on the mask. If for some reason you make a mistake you can either step backwards (Ctrl-Shift-Z) or paint on the masked area in white and will revert back to its original state. You can continue erasing any other area that you feel might be too affected by the red as well.

Now, go back to your selective color options on the same layer you just erased on by double clicking on the layer thumbnail:

From the drop down list of colors, choose BLACKS. We're going to further enhance the image by adding a bit of contrast. I highly suggest spending a few moments playing with all the settings before continuing on, so you can see exactly what part of your image can be affected by changing the settings of the BLACKS in your image.

Now, I just want the blacks in my image to be more vividly black and not blackish/dark gray, so I set my blacks to +10%. We're not trying to darken the image so if you go much more than 10%, the image becomes too dark. Find the setting that works for your image if you're not using the one of Ron that I provided.

Lovely, no? Moving on. Go into the selective coloring options again and go to NEUTRALS. Just a warning here, a little bit goes a -long- way. I lowered the setting of my cyans by -5 to give Ron's face a little more neutral coloring. The coloring is subtle and enough of a chance that I'm happy with it. I cropped and resized my image to make the rest of the tutorial a little more compact (which also makes it look less grainy because it wasn't the highest quality image when we first started):

Now for the blues. Go ahead and make a new Selective Color Layer the same way we did earlier, making sure that you have the top most layer in your layers list selected so the new layer becomes the top most layer (boy I hope that wasn't confusing). Here's a little screenshot to show you what I mean, I renamed my new layer "blues" so you could tell the difference:

Click on OK before making any changes to your new selective color layer. We're going to erase out Ron's image from this layer so it doesn't change the work we just put into enhancing him. Repeat the instructions above of erasing on the mask area to take Ron out of the new selective coloring layer. Here are the results:

Go back into the selective color options. Our background has a lot of blues in it so let's enhance them a bit to make them appear more bold!

First I went into the BLUES in my drop down and turned the magentas down to -100 to enhance the blue in the window. Then I went into my CYANS and turned the cyans up to +100 and the magentas to +50 to enhance the blue in the window some more. The last thing I did was went into my WHITES and turned the cyans, magentas and yellows down to -50 to adjust the coloring of the wall behind Ron. Here are the settings and the results:

I click on OK when I'm done with my adjustments and here is the before and after of the newest selective color adjustment layer. It enhanced the blue in the window and toned down the blues in the rest of the cap to make the walls appear more white:

Now, please keep in mind that this tutorial is simply to enhance properly. There are many great icons out there that use selective coloring to make bright, vivid and interesting changes to images. Here are some other icons I've made where I've used selective coloring to enhance:

From this	to this.

1) Start off with your image. I chose Itachi and Sasuke from Naruto. Use your crop tool and make the settings 80 px (w) by 45 px (h) with a resolution of 72. If you don't see the options to set this, go to Window and select Options.

Note: A resolution of 72 will ensure that your font is displaying in the appropriate size when you add text to your image.

This left me with my base image cropped to 80 x 45.

2) The image looks a little blurry and dark at this size. Select the sharpening tool. You'll find it located on the left side of your tools toolbar, 7 down. You may need to right click on this icon and choose the triangle looking tool to get the sharpen function. Make sure your settings are set to about 20% strength, otherwise you'll over sharpen your image and make it appear pixely. Now brush over your image once to sharpen it slightly.

Next, duplicate your image by going to the layers window, right clicking on the layer you wish to duplicate and select duplicate layer. If you can not see this window, go up to Window and select Layers.

Select the new duplicated layer by clicking on it and set your new layer to screen and play with the opacity until you're satisfied with the contrast. I chose 50%. Keep in mind that if you leave it at 100% it might be too bright and appear washed out/faded however if your image is especially dark, you might need to leave it at 100%.

Note: More advanced photoshop users have been known to use the curves function to brighten an image. It's located under Image then Adjustments and Curves if you want to play around with it.

Use control-E to flatten your image for the end result.

3) Open a new canvas (control-N) and make your settings 100 px (w) by 100 px (h) with a resolution of 72. I usually leave my canvas on transparent but you can make it any setting you choose since we'll be changing it later anyway.

4) Now go back to the image you just cropped (your starting image). Using your eyedropper tool select a nice, muted color from your image. I chose a soft green color from the background of mine.

5) In the newly made canvas (the 100x100 sized one), use your paint bucket tool and fill the layer with your chosen color.

6) Go back to your 80x45 cropped image. Hit control-a to select the entire image, control-c to copy it then on your new 100x100 canvas, use control-v to paste it on. It will center your image. I chose to move mine up towards the top. To move your image, use the move tool .

7) Next make a new layer (control-shift-n).

8) Now select a darker shade of the color you used for your background color by clicking on the foreground color to bring up your color picker window. Once you've chosen your color, click on ok to get out of this window.

9) Now we want to fill an area the same size as our 80x45 image. To easily select this, hold down the control key, click on the layer that has your 80x45 image and you'll see the marquee dotted line show up around the image.

Make a new layer by using control-shift-n then using your paint bucket tool and filling the marquee area on your new layer. (To get rid of the marquee, just press control-d).

Next, set your color fill layer to soft light 100%.

Note: The reason we don't fill the entire layer is because it would change our background color as well.

10) Go back to the original 80x45 image you made for your base and copy it again (control-a to select the entire image, control-c to copy) then return to your 100x100 icon and control-v to paste in the 80x45 image.

11) Desature the new 80x45 image by pressing control-shift-u (or go up to Image - Adjustments - Desature). Your icons should now look something like this:

12) Now we'll move the desaturated layer down once again using the move tool . If you want to ensure that the desaturated layer remains lined up with our colored layer, hold down the shift key while moving the desaturated layer.

13) Repeat step 9, except make sure you click on the desaturated layer this time. The soft light layer will take away from the harshness of the greyscale layer without making it monochrome.

14) For my text, I chose a darker shade of my background color. Georgia is a good font to use, but you don't have to use this one. Experiment with your fonts! I chose the word BROTHERS because it suits the image. Sasuke and Itachi are siblings, in case you aren't familiar with the series Naruto. After I type my word in, I use the move tool again to line it up in a place satisfactory to me.

15) I then added tiny text. Some people like it, some people don't. You don't have to use it. I used a brush by sanami243 @ ownthesunshine but if you're not as lazy as I am, typing in something random using georgia at size 1 or 2 works just as well.

16) Finally, I finished up my icon by using a light texture by lihana:

The first thing I did to it was copy and paste it onto my layers so it was at the very top. Next I went to Edit - Free Transform so I could change the size of the light texture.

Click on the chain to keep the aspect ration, so it doesn't warp your texture. Change the 100% to 50% after you've clicked the chain, and it will make the light texture half the original size.

Set the light texture to screen then use your move tool to bring it up over the colored image of your subject(s).

Viola! You're done. Show me what you come up with. :) Remember, tutorials are meant to be a guide, so experiment and have some fun.

On another note, I've been a busy bee lately (but not an angrybee har har). During the week that I had no internet, I managed to complete two songs which are available on my music myspace page here to download or listen to online. The song titles are Heaven and Mechanic. Not all my music is listed there, since you're only allowed 4 songs up at a time. As I complete more tracks I'll upload them.

I've been working on new textures and hopefully will have some new sets up by the first of August. I'm taking a little break for now.

On a more personal note, I received new word that the men will be coming home between September 21st and October 6th. Can't wait to see my husband. Thankfully time has really flown by these past couple months. I'll be good to have him home.

Icon Tutorial (PS CS3, Originally made in PS 7.0)

This tutorial assumes you know the basic functions and terminology associated with photoshop. All examples used in this tutorial will have SAMPLE written on them to avoid having this tutorial copied step by step. Tutorials are meant to be a guide only. This icon placed second and most creative at bishoujo_awards. This tutorial is not dial-up friendly.


From this	to this.

1) Find your image. I used Orihime from this one. Before I cropped it, I painted the background white behind her as it was easier to do while the image was still enlarged. (You can use your lasso tool to go around your subject and copy/paste on a new layer if you prefer.)

2) Once your background is white, use your cropping tool to crop your image. Be artistic. Center cropping is bland.

3) I used selective coloring to enhance my base's colors. I'll give you my settings, but chances are they wont look as nice on your base unless it's similar in color. Just play around with it. To add a selective coloring layer, do the folowing:

LAYER -> NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER -> SELECTIVE COLORING

My settings:
Reds: 0, 0, 0, +22
Yellow: +31, +69, -45, +9
Cyans: +100, +48, 0, 0
Blues: 0, 0, 0, +40
Neutrals: 0, 0, 0, +20
Blacks: 0, 0, 0, +40

Like I said, play with the settings to enhance the colors of your base. You might not even need to do this with your image. Mine was just a little dull.

4) Next I took this blue floral texture from one of my floral texture packs and set it on the layer above my selective color layer and set it on multiply:

5) There are a few ways to remove the blue from her. You can add a layer mask and then enlarge the image to erase where her body is or you can do what I did. Using my magic wand tool, I highlighted Orihime's base on my layers list, then clicked on the white area of the base around Orihime to highlight the area:

Go back to your layers list, highlight the layer that has your texture then click on the add vector mask icon. When you click on that function, the marquee will go away and cut out Orihime from your texture layer without cutting up the texture itself:

6) Next, I took another texture (from my purple floral textures pack), pasted it above the blue floral layer and set it on saturation 100%:

7) This step will be repeated in the future. I'll refer you back to step 7 when it gets used again. Now we need to cut out Orihime. It's easier to do this time.

Holding down the control key, click on the layer mask that we made in step 5. When you do this, it will highlight the same area we want to keep on our new texture layer:

Make sure that your new texture layer is highlighten (the purple one) and use the add vector mask again. You'll be left with the following:

8) Next I repeated step 7 using this texture (also in my purple floral textures pack) set on soft light 100%:

9) Make a new layer, set to color burn 20% and fill it with #D07373:

10) I took this light texture from conspiracyicons ~~because I'm too lazy to make my own~~ and set it on the top layer on screen. I then rotated it to my liking.

You're done! I added some tiny text for the bishoujo_awards theme but I prefer the second example with the text better:
